CSA Week 18

I can truly not believe that after this week we have only two weeks left to go until our CSA ends, which also marks the end of our growing season on the farm. What exactly does that mean? For me that means more time to cozy up to the wood stove with a good book, more time to enjoy friends and family, more time for dreaming about how the farm will look next year. And then in February it will all start again, the planning, seeding, and prepping for the whirl wind of summer. I have really been enjoying the shorter and cooler days, and the transition in diet that fall often brings. We've been enjoying roasted roots and winter squash, savory stews, and cooked greens. In this weeks box you'll find two new items, garlic and delicata squash. The garlic was grown by our friends at Fiddle Head Farm in Corbett; we simply do not have enough land to grown our own garlic, and they do it so well! Delicata is my hand's down favorite winter squash. It is the perfect size for stuffing, or it can be cut in half and roasted or sliced into rings and drizzled with olive oil and a few shakes of salt and pepper and cooked on a sheet pan in a nice hot oven. The flavor is superb, and I love the moist but not overly wet texture of the flesh. Here's a simple recipe for roasting delicata.  At our house, we don't even remove the seeds, we just let them roast and eat them along with everything else. If you want to try something a little fancier, I love this recipe for stuffed delicata with hazelnuts, yum!

This weekend also marks our chicken harvest. We will be processing 100 meat birds for our friends, families and customers to enjoy. Email me if you'd like more info on purchasing some of our pasture-raised birds.
